Chapter 14

Isabelle carried the used bedsheets out to the storage room for the laundress. She hurried back up to the room she’d been cleaning and made sure everything was in order. Her eyes drifted around the room while she did her mental checklist.

Bed made with new sheets. Window wiped. Everything dusted. Rug beat. Floor swept. Clean towel. Was there something else she was supposed to do? She frowned and shook her head. No, that was it.

Grateful that she could take a break now, Isabelle started to leave when something caught her eye. A photograph was peeking out from under a chair in the corner of the room.

“Oh dear. Did I knock this over?” she wondered, and stooped to pick it up. As her fingers reached out, she suddenly froze, and her heart started thudding.

A familiar face stared back at her from the photograph. The person was younger, but there was no doubt in her mind who it was. In fact, she remembered that very day her picture had been taken.

The photograph fell from her fingers and she backed away, as though it were a hot stove she’d touched. What should she do? Should she tell anyone or just leave? The idea came to her to take the photograph, but then whoever it belonged to would know she’d seen it. Perhaps Asher would know what to do. Or Mrs. Donovan.

Worry raced through her mind, and she stumbled out of the room, nearly tripping down the stairs. There was only one thought running through her mind right now. Seek help. She burst into the kitchen, nearly running over Mrs. Donovan. The woman looked at her crossly, then her face changed. She must have sensed something wrong.

Isabelle’s words came out garbled. She couldn’t even understand herself. “Photograph…room…it’s me.” Her voice was high pitched. She looked around frantically. Only one thought was clear, coherent. She must leave. Must. “I have to go,” she turned to run out of the room when Mrs. Donovan grabbed her arm. Halted, Isabelle turned toward her.

“I don’t understand what you are telling me. You’ve got to slow down. Calm yourself. Use more words,” the older woman ordered sternly.

Isabelle nodded and gulped in a deep breath. At that moment, Asher walked through the door. She pulled herself away from Mrs. Donovan and threw herself at the sheriff. “I’ve been found!” she gasped, and then nearly collapsed from the relief of seeing him.

Two arms wrapped around her, then pulled her back slightly, though he still supported her. “Tell me,” he ordered.

Mrs. Donovan sat them down at the kitchen table, and with a shaking voice, low as she could, Isabelle explained. “I was cleaning room number six. I’d finished, and was just looking once more to make sure I hadn’t forgotten to do something. I don’t want to make a mistake and upset someone.”

At Mrs. Donovan’s approving nod, she continued. “Well, there was a piece of paper underneath the corner chair and I realized it was a photograph. I thought I must have knocked it over when dusting, so I went to pick it up.
